At Karmic Aviaries we keep and breed a wide range of parrots. But the one group that get the most comments are for the members of the Loriinae family in which we have kept any speciesof Exotic Lory/Lorikeets now we are trying to specialising in three/four species of Exotic Lory/Lorikeets

Nectar  Mix

 Ingredients

1          packet Heinz™ High Protien Cereal ™.

1/2       cup dextrose (sugar supplement)

1/2       cup Maltogen™ (available from chemist) ™

Maltogen no longer available so we use Nestle™ powered Malt milk drink.

1/4       cup raw sugar

1/2       cup good quality skim milk powder

Heaped teaspoon Avian Vitamin/Mineral Supplement

Ornate Lorikeet Trichoglossus ornatus we will hopefully get our first pair this year.

Distribution: Celebes and most of the offshore islands, Indonesia.
Habitat: montane forest to 1,000 m (3,300 ft); appears to avoid dense rain forest of lowland areas; occasionally near villages and in gardens.


 

 

Green-naped lorikeets Trichoglossus haematodus haematodus We have been breed this species for around seven year now.

Distribution: Buru, Amboina, Ceram, Ceramlaut, Goram Islands, Watubela, many islands in Geelvink Bay (not on Biak) and western New Guinea from Humboldt Bay to upper Fly River.

Dry  Mix

Ingredients

2          cups Heinz™ Rice Cereal  ™

2          cups Rice Flour

2          cups Egg and Biscuit

1          cup dextrose

1          teaspoon Avian Multi-vitamin power

1/4       cup Sustagen™ Gold (French Vanilla Flavour)™.

1          tablespoon Natural Powdered Brewers' Yeast (Cenovis™) ™.

1          Tablespoon Calcium powder (complete™). ™.
Fruit and Vegies we feed the lorikeets -Bananas, cucumbers, apple, silverbeet, capsicum, orange, peaches, pears, grapes, mango, paw paw, passionfruit, rockmelon, celery, cherry tomatoes, carrots, pumpkin, zucchini, broccoli, corn, peas and sprouted seed about a tablespoon mixed through the mix.  They receive about a 1/4 of a cup each day when not breeding and as much as required when breeding.  They also receive about 2 or 3 slices of apple in the afternoon.  When breeding the amount of apple is also increased.

Black Lory Chalcopsitta. atra atra we are buying a pair this year

A Pair of Cardinal Lories Chalcopsitta cardinalis

Distribution: Solomon Islands and islands of Bougainville, Buka, Nissan, Feni, Tanga, Lihir, Tabar and New Hanover.


Habitat: rain forest, secondary vegetation, mangroves and coconut planatations in lowland areas, but also to 830 m (2,800 ft).

Two young Black Lories Chalcopsitta. atra atra cocks

Distribution: western part of Vogelkop Peninsular, West Irian, New Guinea and islands of Salawati and Batanta.


Habits: nomadic outside breeding season in large flocks, occasionally associates with mynahs; forages mostly in tops of flowering trees and coconut palms; flight straight and fairly slow with rapid, shallow wingbeats; call shrill, high screech not so loud as other lories.

The sub species is the sixth of the Trichoglossus haematodus haematodus

Distribution: southern New Guinea in southern Trans-Fly region and lower Fly River.
